Building Data Marts with Highlander

Step 4 - Build the Dataview Tree

The final preparation step introduces a subject matter hierarchy for organization of the dataviews called the Dataview Tree. This brings structure to the data, communicating the designer's understanding of the subject matter in a visual and intuitive way. The hierarchy is an integral element, appearing when the Highlander Viewer opens the database.

The Highlander Explorer creates and edits the dataview tree. Nodes are created, promoted, demoted, and moved up and down the tree by point and click operations. Navigation nodes form the skeleton on which the subject matter is attached. Dataview nodes add access to the information.

The dataview tree separates the Highlander from other data warehouse toolkits, providing a proven way to quickly display the data mart's subject matter. It is largely responsible for the high ease-of-use reported by Highlander users. Without formal training, users are generally able to intuit their way through the subject matter to any level of detail.
